Artefakt

Past and remembrance light up in the dark.

In his series "Artefakt" Herbert Holzmann follows material traces from his childhood and youth. With the camera he visits places that have preserved the objects of his memory: cellars, attics, barns, abandoned rooms.

They have been waiting there for years: things from the past, physical artefacts of the time, that set start a thought process like a catalyser. Images arise that appear as if they were filtered out directly from the diffuse stream of the memory.

All rooms visited are completely dark. Without assistance, the visitor is blind here. Only the infrared light emitted from the camera lights up the sleeping objects as a narrowly focused beam - however, still invisible to the eye. Only the electric monitor reveals what the camera sees and in this way brings about tangible images. All the objects were not touched by hand. Likewise, after the moment of exposure, nothing was changed on the photographs. Colours are left and blurring is accepted. Unlike our memories, objects do not have to be subsequently corrected.

Text from the catalogue of the 2nd Darmstädter Tage der Fotografie (annual photo festival Darmstadt, Germany). 2006.

Nightscapes

Energy = matter = energy

Long exposure times and movement of the camera and/or the subject - combined with the inverting of the pictures in the camera - give nocturnal phenomena a quasi material dimension. The pictures are photography in the original sense of the word, drawings of nothing other than light.

No objective structure can be perceived. Apparently familiar structures are strange and indistinct in the end. The pure energy here reveals its other - its material - nature and pictures of great suggestive power arise.

All photographs are shown as they originated in the camera; none of the pictures were changed afterwards.

Voyages/Voyages II

Video Dance Performance

A geographic, emotional, biographic journey as a joint project of Herbert Holzmann (video/projection) with Sonja Paffrath and Geli Schubert (dance).

Both young dancers, who are trained in classical ballet, give a dance performance lasting 45 minutes which focused especially on the emotionality of body language

...

[The video installation] shows the means of movement, whether on the street, in a car or underwater in the ocean. In most cases speed is obtained by means of fast-motion cameras. Frequently the real representation is transformed into abstract pictures. To some extent one can surmise, what the figures encounter on their journey, as the dance was loaded with emotions and energy. Sometimes the journey was cheerful and characterised with easiness, and at other times the protagonists were under threat and could only crawl like worms.

Even if not all scenes can be resolved, the very corporally oriented dance theatre is fascinating for the major part of the performance.

In 8 Sekunden um die Welt (Around the world in 8 seconds)

The project "In 8 Sekunden um die Welt" (Around the world in 8 seconds) deals with the simultaneous medial presence of places in the World Wide Web. The raw material for digital processing is taken from Webcams installed world wide. The idea of velocity in virtual space is experienced in a visual way. The results of this work appear like photographs taken with long exposure time at a very high speed. The movement here is, however, not real. Still, the reception works, as we are used to associating this type of depiction with speed.

What do we really see? Through consistent abandoning of all decodable details, a sort of visual distillate of the mapped places comes into being. The impression of speed is extended to the extreme and here we suddenly experience a strange reversal of our perception: The images come to rest and they become mellow and radiate a strong, almost meditative, force. The places reveal the core of their character, because the absence of visual noise enables the view through the surface with great clarity. This process, however, only works for us when we can recall the inner images that we hold in the treasure of our experience.

The end of this working process are not again digital pixels, but Lambda prints in 50x90 cm format on aluminium composit.
